Course Description
This new Masters programme is designed for students wishing to specialise in the biomechanics of gait, posture and balance either for a professional career in health related movement analysis andor for academic and professional development. The programme is particularly well suited to physiotherapists who wish to deepen their biomechanical expertise. Extensive training is provided in laboratory-based skills and in the interpretation of biomechanical findings, as well as comprehensive coverage of contemporary issues in biomechanics. The programme is offered within a full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 year) study framework and aggregates core and option modules on a semester basis. Opportunities for work-related learning (location and nature of activities) There is scope for work based learning through the optional Self Directed Learning and Work Based Learning modules, and within the semester 2 core modules (Clinical Gait Analysis, Balance and Posture). Our research collaborations with movement analysis laboratories provide opportunities for our students to engage in research projects devised together with our clinical partners. Appropriate cases tested through the ongoing Biomechanical Assessment Service may provide opportunities for Campus Based Work Related Learning. Attendance at localregional scientific conferences and seminars is facilitated. Educational aims of the programme prepare students with the means to enhance their own experience of biomechanical motion analysis prepare students for employment in the field of biomechanics in a health context prepare students for more general employment through the development of transferable skills prepare students to undertake postgraduate research in the field of biomechanics enable students to demonstrate an integrated and critical appreciation of conceptual and methodological issues enable students to demonstrate expertise in appropriate research methods enable students to demonstrate mastery of appropriate conceptual material Careers A wide variety of careers are available to our students who hold a PGC, PGD or MSc award. They may choose to continue in education, research or health related applied settings. Several students have gone into teaching and lecturing in schools, colleges and universities. Some will continue their studies with a Doctoral research programme. Practicing physiotherapists will be able to enhance service provision by applying their biomechanical knowledge and skills. Others still will be able to use their expertise as applied practitioners. Admissions Criteria Candidates will be required to have academic qualifications commensurate with entry to postgraduate study, and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for scientific study. We would normally expect a minimum of an upper second class (2.1) B.Sc. (Hons) degree in physiotherapy, physical sciences, sport or other relevant discipline which has a substantial biomechanics component at level 3. Overseas students whose first language is not English will further require an IELTS score of 6.5 or above. Admission is made in line with the current equal opportunities regulations adopted by the University.
