Course Description

The BPTC at Northumbria is well resourced, student centred, delivered in futuristic, purpose built premises and taught by barristers - many of whom practice on circuit. Coupled with this is the opportunity to uplift your BPTC to a full LLM, allowing you to obtain both qualifications in one calendar year. A Masters qualification will undoubtedly increase your prospects of securing pupillage. The emphasis of the programme is on developing the five main skills used by the practising barristers: advocacy, drafting, opinion writing, negotiation, and conference skills. These skills are taught within a practical context using simulated briefs to counsel. Students will also choose two specialist options which are studied in terms two and three. We offer flexible modes of study for those with work or family commitments. As well as the full time route, we offer the BPTC on a part-time basis to enable you to manage your finances and your time, whilst receiving the same excellent standards of teaching and support as the full time BPTC students. A wide choice of electives will allow you to specialise in the area in which you intend to practice and a range of texts in excess of ?1,000 are included within the course fees. LLM Advanced Legal Practice Students are given a unique opportunity to gain an LLM in Advanced Legal Practice while completing the BPTC or LPC at Northumbria University. The LLM is available at a discounted rate when studied alongside the LPC or BPTC and both programmes can be completed in 12-18 months. For the LLM programme, students are required to submit a project of between 20,000 and 25,000 words. Students can choose their own project title. Since the project requires in-depth research it may be closely related to the student's area of practice. This is subject to the requirement that the topic chosen is suitable for supervision within the Law School and will satisfactorily meet the programme learning outcomes. Completion of the LPC, BPTC, Law Society Finals or equivalent entitles students to 120 points advanced standing. Any student who enrols upon the LPC or BPTC at the same time as the LLM must satisfactorily complete their LPC or BPTC before they can be awarded the LLM.
