Birkbeck, University of London

Bachelor Degree , Management Studies

Course Description

Develop a high level of linguistic competence in your chosen language and combine the study of management with an understanding of the cultural context of France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the Spanish-speaking world. Hone the linguistic and intellectual skills needed for efficient negotiation in professional contexts. The language courses enable you to reach a high level of proficiency in the target language, and acquire useful skills such as essay writing and delivering presentations. The management components will give you a good understanding of business and management and the environments in which they operate.  You will also have the opportunity to study a number of cross-cultural modules which will allow you to explore specific themes across a variety of language-speaking areas.

The third year is normally spent abroad at a partner institution to allow you to develop your language skills and your knowledge of the culture of the language-speaking area you are studying.

You can also apply for a three-year version of the programme without a year abroad, and you will normally also be able to transfer to this version of the programme during your first or second year of study if you decide you do not wish to study outside of the UK.

Course Content

You will acquire 420 credits over four years, including 60 during your study year abroad. The modules you take will be dependent both on your interests and your language level, so your course structure will be tailored to meet your personal requirements. You can begin this programme with any level of language, from beginner to native speaker proficiency.

At Birkbeck you complete the equivalent of 12 full (30-credit) modules, normally taking six management modules and six culture and language modules. Depending on entry level, a maximum of three of these will be from one of the languages on offer, forming a language pathway.

Entry Requirements

We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential.

This programme is suitable for beginners in Japanese. For French, German, Italian and Spanish a minimum of CEFR level A2 (GCSE or equivalent) is required.

GCSE-level English and mathematics is also required. Applicants who do not hold this level of qualification may be required to carry out a skills audit at a selection evening to assess their potential to cope with, and benefit from, this programme of study.

UCAS TARIFF POINTS

104

The UCAS tariff score is applicable to you if you have recently studied a qualification that has a UCAS tariff equivalence. UCAS provides a tariff calculator for you to work out what your qualification is worth within the UCAS tariff.

ALTERNATIVE ENTRY ROUTES

We welcome applications from students on Access to Higher Education Diplomas.

Credits gained on the Certificate of Higher Education in Culture and Language (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish) can be counted towards the degree.

YEAR ABROAD

Please note you must make satisfactory progress during Years 1 and 2 of your degree to be eligible for a year abroad. Additionally, the non-UK partner institution may set its own entrance criteria, including, but not limited to, academic criteria, language requirements and visa requirements. In instances where a student does not meet the eligibility criteria for an approved year abroad, their registration may be transferred to the corresponding BA programme pathway without the ‘with International Experience’ designation.

INTERNATIONAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.

If you don’t meet the minimum IELTS requirement, we offer pre-sessional English courses, foundation programmes and language support services to help you improve your English language skills and get your place at Birkbeck.

Visit the International section of our website to find out more about our English language entry requirements and relevant requirements by country.

Please be aware that you will initially be provided with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to study for the first two years of your course while at Birkbeck. During your third year of study at a European institution, you will be required to obtain a visa for that specific country. When you return to the UK to complete your fourth year, Birkbeck will issue you with a second CAS so that you can apply for another Tier 4 visa for your final year. You will therefore need to make a total of three visa applications: two for Birkbeck and one for the European institution.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

If you are not from the European Economic Area (EEA) and/or Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa.

The visa you apply for varies according to the length of your course:

  • Courses of more than six months' duration.
  • Courses of less than six months' duration.
  • Pre-sessional English language courses.

International students who require a Tier 4 visa should apply for our full-time courses (with the exception of modular enrolment certificates of higher education and graduate certificates), as these qualify for Tier 4 sponsorship. If you are living in the UK on a Tier 4 visa, you will not be eligible to enrol as a student on Birkbeck's part-time courses (with the exception of some modules).

Assessment Methods

Assessment is an integral part of your university studies and usually consists of a combination of coursework and examinations, although this will vary from course to course - on some of our courses, assessment is entirely by coursework. The methods of assessment on this course are specified below under 'Methods of assessment on this course'. You will need to allow time to complete coursework and prepare for exams.

Where a course has unseen written examinations, these may be held termly, but, on the majority of our courses, exams are usually taken in the Summer term, during May to June. Exams may be held at other times of the year as well. In most cases, exams are held during the day on a weekday - if you have daytime commitments, you will need to make arrangements for daytime attendance - but some exams are held in the evening. Exam timetables are published online.
