Course Description
Studying on this course offers a genuinely collaborative learning experience with practising members of the design industry. Having a fully-accredited BA (Hons) Degree will greatly assist students with their future career in Interior Design as it will expand your commercial career opportunities. A graduate can start their own commercial design business or join a design or architectural practice as a qualified Commercial Interior Designer.
A series of lectures and seminars are given by industry professional design consultants mechanical, electrical and structural engineers, along with environmental and contract consultants.
Design Projects briefs are based on real sites within London, with challenging yet rewarding project briefs. Previous projects including the lobby of the Bank of America in Canary Wharf, a restaurant in Saville Row and a pop-up exhibition in Shoreditch – giving students first-hand experience of professional design practices.
Students studying full time can expect to receive extensive tutor support and personalised supervision throughout their time at KLC.
Course Content
Term One
Design Project 1 - Design Concept and Design Development
Dissertation - 5,000 Word Historical and Critical Dissertation
Report 1 - Professional Practice and Business Administration
Report 2 - Construction, Technology and Environment
The course starts with a 3 day beginner’s course using REVIT, the latest drawing software in the industry. This is utilised along with In Design and Photoshop to communicate a design proposal in response to the first design brief. Lectures and workshops on professional practice and the legislative framework, which correlate with design projects, provide insight into working as a designer. The first term also covers topics such as the natural world, sustainability and the environmental impact of the building industry, and ethical design issues in relation to the built environment. Lectures, seminars and tutorials help students in their approach to the design dissertation, through exploring creative ways of researching by using different symbolic modes of representation, vis-à-vis images, moving-images, movement, etc., to consider practice in a conceptual way and how research is designed.
Term Two
Design Project 2 - Design - Synthesis and Resolution - Social Design

This term starts with an advanced REVIT course, introducing students to 3D digital modelling. Seminars, pin-ups, peer reviews, lectures and workshops on construction, technology, the environment, professional practice and dissertations continue to inform and inspire students to progress within design practice. A number of industry experts, such as site inspectors and quantity surveyors, describe their roles and responsibilities and how they work with designers and design teams on and off-site. This and the third term’s absorbing and challenging design project characterises a design proposal that aims to achieve a positive effect on society. Design challenges will increase students’ skills during which design solutions will evolve by demonstrating high levels of design literacy and critical thinking. Students will present work at a professional level through sketches, diagrams, visuals, drawings etc. using creative techniques coherent to the design proposal.
Term Three
Design Project 2
In the last term, students will develop and finalise their design proposal. On completion and presentation of the final project, they will be attending a series of introduction days with suppliers, manufacturers and professionals from the commercial interior design sector. Throughout the course, the Career Service offers 1-2-1 sessions for portfolio and CV advice, internships and interviews. The course culminates in a final, celebratory Exhibition and Graduation Ceremony, attended by prominent designers and professionals from the interior design industry.
Entry Requirements
Internal applicants can progress on to the BA (Hons) subject to successful completion of:
- Foundation Degree Interior Design (Levels 4 & 5)
- Diploma Interior Design (Level 5)
along with an endorsement from their Course Leader.
External applicants will require:
- Foundation Degree or equivalent in a design-related subject area
(i.e. Higher National Diploma / Level 5 qualification) - A digital portfolio of work demonstrating a variety of skills, including evidence of technical drawing and computer-aided design programmes
Applicants should also have the necessary computer skills for a degree level course and students are required to have a PC laptop computer.
We are able to accept international applicants onto this course, subject to the following:
- IELTS score of 6.5 (www.ielts.org)
- Successful application for a Tier 4 Visa
