Course Description
MRes Architecture aims to develop your understanding of architecture, space, place and the built environment through exposure to the current theories and debates around the subject. You will also have the opportunity to pursue your own area of research. The programme comprises three assessed modules: Re-thinking architecture Research in the arts and humanities, and the master thesis or approved research project. Delivered as weekly taught seminars led by subject-specific staff, Rethinking architecture will develop your knowledge of the topical debates relating to the approaches, theories and methodologies of architecture. By the end of the module you will be able to demonstrate a detailed and systematic understanding of current theory and knowledge within architecture, and form considered critical judgements about relationships between architectural theory and society. Research in the arts and humanities is delivered over two terms, and is a module shared with MRes students from other subjects. You will participate in seminar groups, thematic research studies workshops, and Graduate School training sessions and workshops. Assessment is carried out through a project proposal, journal or critical log, plus a research presentation. The thesis or approved research project relevant to the study of architecture will be the major assessed element of the programme. This is taught via one-to-one supervision during term time and through agreed tutorials. You will also be encouraged to participate in seminar groups and postgraduate training opportunities.
