Royal College of Art

Masters Degree , Animation

Course Description

A generous bursary scheme exists at the RCA for eligible students: this year the Royal College of Art allocated ?2.8 million in fees and maintenance grants. The Animation Department offers a vibrant environment in which students are enabled to extend the study and practice of animation and to develop their individual voice. The focus of the MA course is on directing animation. Students create a number of projects and develop their ability to express an idea through moving image. A selection of work by members of the Animation Department is now viewable on the BBC film network website http:tinyurl.comRCA-Animation-BBC The Department selects a challenging range of artists each year to facilitate cross-pollination between different and engaging means of expression. Documentary, fiction, narrative and non-narrative approaches are all encouraged. Key elements explored during the course include structure, pace and rhythm and the interplay between image and sound. Additionally, character development, animation skill, directing actors, pace and timing remain important elements in the study and practice of animation. Construction of images and the compositing of elements from many sources including: live action, models, photography, objects and textures are encouraged and supported, and there is the opportunity to combine new and traditional forms of animation to create exciting and original methods of audio-visual projects. Screenings and Prizes RCA Animation graduate Suzie Templeton won an Oscar in 2008 for Peter and the Wolf and Grand Prix at Annecy. Other accolades for artistic achievement include BAFTAs for Guy 101 by Ian Gouldstone (2007), Fish Never Sleep by Gaelle Denis in 2003 and Dog directed by Suzie Templeton (2001). The Royal Television Society Award went to Ian Gouldstone for Guy 101 in 2006, and to Suzie Templeton for Dog in 2001. Johnny Kelly, graduate of 2007, won the Conran Foundation Award for his second-year film Procrastination, which went on to win the inaugural Jerwood Prize for Moving Image 2008.
