PG Dip in Paediatric Ambulatory Care (120 credits Level M) PG Cert in Paediatric Ambulatory Care (60 credits Level M) Introduction The practice of caring for children when they are ill, but do not require hospitalisation is termed paediatric ambulatory care. It is a concept driven by the NHS modernisation agenda as it provides facilities and services directly related to patient need in a manner that is convenient to the patient. The APNP role represents a convergence of three national policy streams (i.e. modernisation, advanced nursing and care for neonates, infants, children and young people). It also signifies a shift from the traditional model of primary care service delivery and establishes infants, children and young people as a separate but equal strand of the larger primary care system. The objective of this clinical Master's programme is the development of Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioners (APNPs) in Paediatric Ambulatory Care that can: 1) Assess, diagnose and manage the wide variety of conditions that present in ambulatory settings (e.g. general practice, walk-in centres, minor illnessinjury units, paediatric assessment units, AE, schools, health centres, outpatient departments etc.) 2) Provide direct services related to health protectionpromotion and disease prevention (e.g. child health surveillance, 6-8 week checks, newborn discharge examinations, parenting support, developmental advice and screening, anticipatory guidance etc.) Modules in the last year of the programme focus on advanced skills in evidenced-based practice, case management of infants, children and adolescents with complex health needs and issues in advanced practice (with a special emphasis on the development and implementation of new roles). The programme places tremendous emphasis on clinical acumen and requires over 500 hours of precepted practice in a variety of ambulatory settings. In addition, the programme is unique in its integration of research and evidence-based practice in each module (rather than consolidating the research into a large dissertation project). This shift from a traditional MSc educational structure operationalises the concepts of modernisation and evidenced-based practice as you will research, evaluate and apply the evidence base to advanced clinical paediatrics from the very first module. The pharmacology component of the programme allows for the optional addition of the Extended Independent and Supplementary Prescribing (Advanced Paediatric Prescribing and Pharmacology) module which leads to the NMC V300 independent nurse prescribing award. This is the only V300 programme in the country that applies the NMC content to paediatric and neonatal prescribers.
