Course Description

An exciting and flexible course for experienced nurses in advanced and autonomous roles, the Advanced Nurse Practitioner MSc allows students to expand their knowledge and competency according to the requirements of their professional practice by choosing from a wide range of clinically relevant modules. Part-time study is recommended to allow students a flexible approach to learning which is responsive to their specific learning needs and the requirements of their professional role. Students are challenged to explore the evidence base for practice and to develop their contribution to care through analysis and evaluation of the concepts and theories which underpin advanced nursing practice. This course develops political awareness, practice competency and critical evaluation skills as the foundations of a scholarly approach to practice development ? benefiting not only the students, but patients and the health care service as a whole. Mandatory modules for the MSc include Physical Assessment and Advanced Nurse Practitioner Studies together with a research methods module and a dissertation. Students also undertake another three optional modules relevant to their practice chosen from the graduate programme. Popular choices are Case Management, Independent and Supplementary Prescribing, and Leadership and Management. Clinical modules such as Heart Failure, Advanced Respiratory Care, and Diabetes are also available. Master s level education is an important component of advanced and specialist nursing practice to support greater autonomy in delegated and substituted medical roles. This course also promotes deeper understanding and evaluation of the nursing contribution to patient-centred care and service development in accordance with the Knowledge and Skills Framework at Level 4. It is possible to take modules for this course as single stand-alone modules, either as a sample of Masters level study, or as part of your continuing professional development.
