Course Description
This programme offers students the opportunity to study Marketing to an advanced postgraduate level. There are two variations of the programme available: MSc Econ Advanced Marketing (Specialist) MSc Econ Advanced Marketing (Research Training) The Specialist programme is designed for those who wish to pursue a career in Marketing and are seeking to undertake an advanced postgraduate degree in order to enhance their employability. The Research Training programme is designed primarily for these who wish to undertake further study of Marketing, possibly at PhD level, or else are planning a research-based career in the non-academic environment. The underlying premise of both programmes is to develop an integrated and critical approach to the study of Marketing. Fundamental to the programme, therefore, is the fostering of a strong relationship between Marketing theory and Marketing practice, and the student is challenged to look beyond the superficial aspects of description and to use deeper levels of analysis to search for more innovative and creative solutions to Marketing issues. Students will also be encouraged to consider, in a critical, self-reflexive way, their own positioning in relation to the theories and concepts they engage with. Programme Content The programme is structured in two parts. Part One, which comprises semesters one and two, is structured around a range of taught modules. In semester one students take three core modules. In semester two students elect three modules from a choice of four. Part Two of the programme comprises the dissertation element, which runs during semester three. Advanced Marketing (Specialist Scheme): Marketing Theory Marketing Applications Research Methods Branding Corporate Marketing Communicatons Culture, Consumption and Society Globalization Dissertation. Advanced Marketing (Research Training Scheme): Marketing Theory Principles of Research Design Data Collection and Analysis Branding Corporate Marketing Communicatons Culture, Consumption and Society Globalization Dissertation. Learning Approach The primary method of teaching on this programme will be through a range of interactive seminars rather than traditional lectures. The use of seminars allows students to develop their own ideas and to express, and ultimately justify and defend them, against competing claims. Part of the aim is to encourage the student to take increasing responsibility for his or her own learning. The case study method, that will serve as a primary teaching tool, calls for the student to demonstrate a range of critical, creative and problem solving skills in order to draw meaningful data from the particular scenario presented and also to be able to offer constructive solutions to the case. Coursework is the primary assessment method on this programme. In most cases this will comprise a portfolio of assessments, which include, but are not restricted to: individual essays, reports and presentations and group reports and presentations. All staff that teach on the programme are actively involved in research into Marketing. They bring the theories, problems and issues of their research into their teaching, which makes for a fresh and vibrant learning environment. Staff disseminate their research through the Centre for Research in Marketing.
